Summary: Yoelson was born in Lithuania, as the fourth child to Jewish Cantor Moses Reuben Yoelson and his wife Naomi. Among Asa's siblings were sister, and oldest child, Rose, sister Etta, older brother Hirsch, a sister who died in infancy. With the oppression against Jews that occurred in the Czarist Russian Empire, Cantor Yoelson like many other of his fellow countrymen set his sights on America.
