Etta James

An American Soul Singer.

The singer of many hits over the years.

Discovered by Johnny Otis in the late fifties.

Also a songwriter. Co writer of her first hit,"Roll with me Henry".

Etta James is a combination of soul and rock with all the energy rolled into one.

Her renditions of a rock song is singing it her way but not losing
the ingrediance of the song, sometimes in many cases enhancing
the song to greater realms.

She received her first professional vocal training at the age of five years old, from James Earle Hines, musical director of the Echoes of Eden choir at St. Paul Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

James' family moved to San Francisco in 1950 and James soon teamed up with two other girls to form a Doo Wop singing group. James and the trio went to Los Angeles to record the song in 1954.

By this time, the trio renamed the song "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)" and released it in 1955.

The Peaches and Etta parted company, but this did not halt her career.

James toured with Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Otis Redding in the fifties and has cited Watson as the most significant influence on her style.

In 1960, Etta signed a recording contract with Chess Records.

In 1961 came the release of one of her first pop-oriented tunes called "At Last". The song became a big hit in 1961, reaching #2 on the R&B charts.

The song would be her biggest hit of her greaqt carer.

James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.

Her pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

In 2003 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004.

Etta James performed at the top world jazz festivals in the world, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, 1989, 1990, and 1993,

James was hospitalized in January 2010 to treat an infection caused by MRSA. During her hospitalization, her son Donto revealed that James had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2008.

She was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2011. The illness became terminal and she died on January 20, 2012, just five days before her 74th birthday, at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, California. (aged 73)
