The Rankin Family got their start singing and dancing in their hometown of where they formed in 1989 in Mabou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Jimmy Rankin - vocals (born May 28, 1964)
John Morris Rankin - piano, fiddle (April 28, 1959 - January 16, 2000)
Cookie Rankin - vocals (born May 4, 1965)
Raylene Rankin - vocals (born September 15, 1960)
Heather Rankin - vocals (born October 24, 1967)
The band had aunique blend of Celtic traditionalism and contemporary folk and pop, dominated by the effortless harmonies of the Rankin sisters.
In 1989 the combo recorded and self-released its debut and traveled throughout Eastern Canada.
The Rankin Family Disbanded 1999 in Mabou, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Carol Jean went on to a solo career, Heather went into acting, and Jimmy continued to work as a songwriter
Just a few months after the announcement, John was killed in a traffic accident in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
He was aged only 40 years old.
The Rankin Family returned to the concert stage and music spotlight in January and February of 2007, showcasing their award winning harmonies and timeless music compositions in their first cross-Canada, 22-city tour in over eight years.
