A popular song written by Irving Berlin in 1925, as a wedding gift for his wife Ellin McKay, whom he married in 1926, and to whom he presented the substantial royalties.
The song was supposed to be used for the Marx Brothers Broadway musical (later film)The Cocoanuts (1927) but was cut by Berlin during out-of-town tryouts.
In 1942 it was used as the theme music for the film The Pride of the Yankees. Hit versions have been recorded by such diverse artists as Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday, Billy Corgan, Guy Lombardo, Leonard Cohen, Phil Collins, etc.
